Crowns are a fixed prosthetic device that can only be removed by a dentist. Crowns will cover or ‘cap’ a damaged tooth.
There are several reasons someone would need a crown:
- Cover a tooth that has had a root canal treatment
- Used to attach a bridge
- Protect a weak tooth from breaking
- Replace a large filling when the main tooth is mostly gone
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discolored or disfigured tooth
Crowns are typically made from one of the following materials:
- Porcelain
- Ceramic
- Gold and metal alloys
- Acrylic
Cosmetic crowns are usually made of porcelain or ceramic. Your dentist will give you options and explain which one is best for your situation.
Typically crowns take two visits. However, New Town Dentistry offers same day crown service. Click here to find out more about our CEREC technology. Before a crown can be installed, the tooth must be made ready so that that crown will fit properly. After preparing the tooth, your dentist will take an impression to provide an exact mold for the crown. While the permanent crown is being made, you will have a temporary crown to cover the damaged tooth – unless you are using our same day service.
Crowns can last a lifetime, but sometimes the come loose or fall out. Besides avoiding hard foods, such as ice or candy, good oral hygiene is the best preventative for this happening. See your dentist regularly and brush and floss daily.
